FIGHTING FOR QUALITY EDUCATION FOR ALL
WALKING THE WALK
For Tom Wyatt, the fight for quality education is personal. He went from a trailer home to a rewarding legal career because of educational opportunities he received. After college, he worked for two years as a public school teacher and saw how a strong neighborhood school can enrich a child’s life and uplift a community. As a private citizen, he has been advocating for South Philly's schools for years and is the proud father of a kindergartner who attends his local public elementary (Jackson).
FAIR-FUNDING PLAN FOR SCHOOLS
A strong public school is the backbone of a great community. Currently, unfair funding practices put our schools---and entire neighborhood---at risk.
That is why Tom will fight for increased funding and for a fairer school-funding formula. The wealthiest corporations are hurting our schools because they fail to pay their fair share of taxes. This directly affects our hard-working teachers, who not only endure the constant threat of layoffs, but who also often lack the basic resources they need to educate our children.
As your State Representative, Tom will introduce legislation that raises revenue through a fairer tax system and will allocate that increased revenue to our public schools.
KEY INITIATIVES WILL INCLUDE
- Fair teachers’ contracts and workplace stability.
- Sensible class sizes.
- Repair of crumbling infrastructure.
- Music, Arts, Libraries that are treated as necessities, not luxuries.
- Full-time school nurses.
Tom knows that investing in education is fiscally responsible. Studies show that an educated workforce attracts job creators and industry leaders searching for great talent. He knows the power of preparing students for jobs in the information age, as well as broadening the role of technical and trade schools. Tom is committed to making sure no child is left behind in today's diverse and rapidly changing job market.
